UNDEF project empowers women and local communities in Moldova

Inclusive and sustainable communities require women’s participation and gender equality in community development, civic affairs and policy making. This is the theme of the UNDEF-backed project by The Women’s Law Center (WLC) which hosted its first workshop from 14-16 December in Moldova. By actively engaging women, men, and relevant authorities, the project aims to combat gender stereotypes, shape behaviors and redefine gender roles in an effort to identify viable, inclusive solutions to local needs.

In five workshop modules participants from 10 districts throughout the country focused on gender equality and combating gender stereotypes; non-violent communication; gender equality promotion practices; gender equality needs identification at the community level; and communication with local public authorities and other important actors.

Workshop participants were able to learn from prominent leading figures working in the field of gender equality. Special guest Olga Bulmaga, Secretary of the Council for Equality of the Republic of Moldova, discussed with participants the most pressing issues related to prevention and protection against discrimination, ensuring equality, promoting equal opportunities and diversity. All participants drafted a preliminary action plan for implementing gender equality initiatives in their communities; worked on identifying local stakeholders to approach for future joint activities; and planned next steps to be taken in communicating with their communities.
