The 49th session of the Commission on Population and Development (CPD) will be devoted to the theme "Strengthening the demographic evidence base for the post-2015 development agenda". The United Nations Population Division has convened an expert group meeting in October 2015 to inform the UN Secretary-General report to be presented at this CPD session in April 2016.

Overview

The question of how to feed a growing global population has been central to discussions around population and development for decades. While the Programme of Action of the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development highlighted the problem of undernutrition, today's discussion of malnutrition is broader and includes stunting, wasting, overweight and obesity, as well as micronutrient deficiencies. Moreover, there is an increasing recognition of the challenges to food security posed by factors such as climate change, conflict and economic downturns.

Overview

Population ageing is expected to have a major impact on life in the twenty-first century. Concerned by the looming pension crisis, many Governments are promoting more self-reliance in income security for older persons and greater family responsibility for providing care. Consequently, patterns of care-giving and co-residence are emerging as pre-eminent issues related to the well-being of older persons.
