Dear wonderful Retirees,

Now that I have joined your ranks, I can truly call you wonderful and esteemed. I hope all is well with you. I write to bring you news of the 22 September 2023 Annual General Meeting of the UN Staff 1% for Development Fund, and to ask you for a favor. The news is that the AGM passed all seven of the projects under consideration. We had the pleasure of the company of three of you very faithful members, all retirees, and wish we could have seen more there.

The projects are, as you can see, 6 in Africa and one in Asia

MLW/22/1            Soap making                           $ 5,000 Pat (400 beneficiaries)

NEP/22/1              Tailoring, cells, beautician     $ 4,500 Madison (200 youth)

KEN/21/2              Soya bean processing             $ 5,000 Andrea (500 beneficiaries)

ZIM/22/1              Mushrooms                             $ 5,000 Sam (300 beneficiaries)

KEN/23/1              Smoke free briquettes             $ 4,870 Alice (2,500 beneficiaries)

CAM/22/2             Potatoes and poultry               $ 5,000 Andrea (1,500 beneficiaries)

CAM/22/1             Cooking stoves                       $ 5,000 Chuck (1,000 beneficiaries)

The first two involve training (tertiary level), three are for agricultural basic needs projects, and this year we have two new environmental ones. They will be funded in the usual staggered fashion.

Now for the favor. Since our membership continually dwindles as active staff retire, with a negative impact on the source of funds with which we can assist beneficiaries, we wish to ask you to join or to rejoin the 1% Fund and to request all your friends to do the same. Take part in a cause which is truly worthwhile and rewarding, particularly in these troubled times.

For retirees the application method is to request the Credit Union, or if you don’t have an account with them, your bank, to set up a monthly autopay (or make a one-time payment) to the United Nations Federal Credit Union.
