Meeting with Foreign Minister of the People’s Republic of China

The President of the General Assembly Mogens Lykketoft briefed the Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Saturday about his priorities for the 70th session of the General Assembly. Mr. Lykketoft stressed on the importance of taking swift action to implement the ambitious and transformative 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Mr Lykketoft commended China on the positive steps taken to address climate change and the important measures announced by Chinese President Xi Jinping at the Sustainable Development Summit. He encouraged China to continue to make efforts to ensure a global climate change agreement in Paris and expressed the hope that cooperation between UN and China will be further strengthened in all areas.

The Chinese Foreign Minister congratulated the President on assuming such important responsibilities and pledged China’s support for his work. Mr.Wang expressed appreciation that priority is given to effective implementation of the 2030 Agenda at the 70th session of the GA and reiterated China’s support for the President’s leading role in the process. Mr. Wang also emphasized that China will continue to contribute to the UN endeavour to maintain world peace and stability.
