What is the UN Summit of the Future
The Summit of the Future is a high-level event, bringing world leaders together to forge a new international consensus on how we deliver a better present and safeguard the future. It will be hosted by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on 22-23 September 2024 under the theme “multilateral solutions for a better tomorrow”.
The aim of the Summit is twofold:
- accelerate efforts to meet our existing international commitments, and
- take concrete steps to respond to emerging challenges and opportunities.
This will be achieved through an action-oriented outcome document called A Pact for the Future. The Pact will be negotiated and endorsed by countries in the lead-up to and during the Summit in September 2024.
The result will be a world – and an international system – that is better prepared to manage the challenges we face now and, in the future, for the sake of all humanity and for future generations.
Scope of the Summit
On 30 August 2023, the General Assembly adopted a decision (A/77/L.109 adopted as Decision 77/568) outlining the Scope of the Summit of the Future. This decision decided that the scope of the Summit of the Future will encompass the following elements, which will be reflected in the outcome document entitled “A Pact for the Future” comprising a chapeau and five chapters as follows:
(i) Chapter I. Sustainable development and financing for development;
(ii) Chapter II. International peace and security;
(iii) Chapter III. Science, technology and innovation and digital cooperation;
(iv) Chapter IV. Youth and future generations;
(v) Chapter V. Transforming global governance;The decision on the scope also mandated that the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development be taken into account in the relevant chapters of the Pact for the Future.

UNGA Sustainability Week (15-19 April 2024)
As we passed the critical milestone of the mid-point in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, impactful transformation remains central to the ongoing efforts to advance all three dimensions of sustainable development – social, economic, and environmental – to achieve peace, prosperity, progress, and sustainability for all. Among others, COVID-19, conflicts, geopolitical tensions, and humanitarian crises in various parts of the world have posed severe challenges to these efforts and derailed implementation of the SDGs by 2030. Building on the momentum gained from the September 2023 SDG Summit is important in effectively tackling the triple planetary crises of climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution.
In this regard, the President of the General Assembly for its seventy-eighth session, H.E. Mr. Dennis Francis, convened the first-ever Sustainability Week, at United Nations Headquarters in New York from 15-19 April 2024.
Gayap Dialogues
President of the General Assembly, H.E Dennis Francis, convened Gayap Dialogues for the upcoming Summit of the Future on November 28, 2023, and April 11, 2024.
They discussed some of the key questions for ensuring a successful and inclusive Summit in September. The Summit is not an end in and of itself, but the start of a journey toward a stronger multilateral system driving SDG progress.
The summaries for both Gayap dialogues can be found here and here.
Engagement with the civil Society/ Stakeholders
Maintaining inclusivity of the Summit of the Future is not only important but also essential as inclusivity, stakeholder support and ownership of the process are critical to ensuring sustained action at national and regional levels, that translates into tangible gains.. Accordingly, the President of the United Nations General Assembly engaged with various stakeholders including civil society organizations throughout the preparations for the Summit of the Future.
This includes the Civil Society Town Hall, on 12 December 2023, the meeting with civil society representatives in Geneva, on 27 February 2024, as well as his remarks at the UN Civil Society Conference in Nairobi, 9 May 2024.

SIDS are among the countries most anxious about their future, as climate change and sea level rise pose a grave and imminent danger to their communities.
At the Summit of The Future, our ambitions must be bold and actionable enough to secure sustainable prosperity for SIDS and the rest of the world alike. #OurCommonFuture #SoTF
Had a productive meeting with H.E. Dr. Vivian Balakrishnan, Singapore’s Foreign Minister.
We discussed critical issues like accelerating implementation of the SDGs, education, climate change, sea level rise, peace and security and the vital role of small states in global multilateralism. I count on Singapore’s continued support for the upcoming Summit of the Future in September and its key outcome documents, including the Pact for the Future and the Global Digital Compact.

I was honored, while in Namibia, to participate in a roundtable discussion on debt sustainability and the reform of the international financial architecture. There was broad agreement that the current situation is untenable and opportunities, such as the #SummitOfTheFuture, must be leveraged.
