On September 25, 2013, the President of the United Nations General Assembly organized a special event on Achieving the Millennium Development Goals by 2015.

At the special event, Member States reaffirmed their commitment to achieving the goals and agreed to convene a High-level Summit in September 2015 to adopt a new set of goals which would build on the foundations laid by the Millennium Development Goals and on future challenges. The new goals were meant to balance the three elements of sustainable development namely: providing economic transformation and the opportunity to lift people out of poverty, promote social justice and protect the environment.
