On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the adoption of Security Council Resolution 1540 (2004), the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs, in cooperation with UN Television, produced a documentary film “Weapons of Mass Destruction: Threats and Global Responses.”
United Nations Security Council Resolution 1540 (2004) was unanimously adopted on 28 April 2004. The resolution obliges States to refrain from providing any form of support to non-State actors that attempt to acquire nuclear, chemical or biological weapons and their means of delivery.
Pursuant to Security Council Resolution 1540 (2004), the 1540 Committee was established as a subsidiary body of the Security Council. The Committee is tasked to report to the Council on the implementation of the resolution.
Weapons of mass destruction – nuclear, biological and chemical – have plagued the human race since their invention – and they still pose a threat today. Terror attacks – and accidents – have spread panic in several countries over recent decades. But there are signs that increased vigilance and cooperation can help create a safer world.
