Pre-Conference Events

Youth Declaration Townhall
Date: Monday, 20 August 2018
Time: 2 - 3:15 p.m.
Location: Conference Room 9, United Nations Conference Building, IB

To achieve the most impactful resolutions for youth in the upcoming year, a Youth Declaration is being drafted representing the views of the younger generation on a spectrum of global issues reflected in the Sustainable Development Goals. The Youth Declaration will highlight recommendations and testimonials from youth on the Conference theme, and will be part of the main Conference Outcome Document. The Youth Declaration Townhall will help the Youth Sub-committee understand issues of concern to young people and select primary issues and topics that can be included in the Youth Declaration and overall Conference Outcome Document.

The Youth SDGs Strut
Date: Tuesday, 21 August 2018
Time: 4 - 5:45 p.m.
Location: Bryant Park (42nd Street and Fifth Avenue) to Dag Hammarskjöld Park (First Avenue and 47th Street)

The goal of The Youth Strut is to promote multilateralism and increase conference visibility outside of the United Nations. The event will include a march starting from Bryant Park to Dag Hammarskjöld Park, and rally to support the SDGs.

This event aims to provide a space for youth participants to network with the Youth Sub-committee members and DPI NGO Youth Representative Steering Committee members to learn more about how youth can get involved at the UN.

Youth Caucus: Day 1 - "We the Youths..."

Meetings held at the Youth Caucus will focus on specific youth-related topics for discussion to strategize intergenerational participation and ensure high visibility and integration of the Youth Voice in the conference.

 

Youth Hub Sessions: Day 1
Date: Wednesday, 22 August 2018
Time: 10 a.m. - 6 p.m.
Location: UN General Assembly Lobby

The Youth Hub, although open to all, is a dedicated space for youth to meet, network and showcase their innovation around the conference theme and the Sustainable Development Goals. The Hub will showcase youth projects and initiatives through videos, posters, performances.

Youth Hub Session 1: The Role of Underrepresented Sectors in NGO Work

Date: Wednesday, 22 August 2018
Time: 11:30 a.m. - 12:45 p.m.

This session will examine the work underrepresented sectors that support NGOs in achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, including implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).  Panelists will present perspectives from various disciplines, including the legal, data science, software engineering and media fields and offer best practices, strategies and lessons learned to illustrate the impact of grassroots organizations in communities.

Youth Hub Session 2: Building a Career Towards Multilateralism

Date: Wednesday, 22 August 2018
Time: 1:30 - 2:30 p.m. 

This session will provide an opportunity for young professionals who want a career in public service to dialogue with UN officials and representatives from civil society working in the field of multilateralism. Speakers will share personal stories and field experience.

 

Youth Jam (Movement to Change the World)
Date: Wednesday, 22 August 2018 
Time: 1 - 3 p.m.
Location: UN Plaza, UN Visitors Entrance (First Avenue and 45th Street)

The Youth Jam will offer a space for music, dance and performance arts. Events planned include a hip-hop dance group and fashion show of participants in their respective cultural attire. The Jam space will also include a banner for youth and others attending the conference to write their names and messages on.

 

Youth Workshop: A Young Activist’s Toolkit for Advancing the SDGs
Date: Wednesday, 22 August 2018 
Time: 3 - 4:15 p.m.
Location: Conference Room 12, UN Conference Building, 1B

This workshop will examine the challenges faced by implementers of youth-led initiatives and demonstrate that, in spite of difficulties, real change is possible. This workshop will highlight key approaches associated with the UN’s Global Citizenship Education (GCED) that emphasize respect for all and support for learners becoming responsible and active global citizens. The session will provide knowledge and tools essential to implementing projects that advance the Sustainable Development Goals. Participants in turn will discuss and propose practical solutions to SDG implementation.

The draft outline of A Young Activist’s Toolkit to Advancing the Sustainable Development Goals, being developed by young people working in and leading NGOs associated with the UN Department of Public Information, will be shared for review and input.  

With an emphasis on best practices and lessons learned, workshop speakers will present a range of youth-led projects and initiatives that demonstrate effective methods to achieve project goals and impact on the ground.

 

Conference Roundtable: Youth: Today’s Leaders
Date: Wednesday, 22 August 2018
Time: 4:30 - 6 p.m.
Location: Conference Room 1, UN Conference Building, 1B

The Roundtables are a series of fora where conference participants can exchange ideas and experiences with diverse experts. The Roundtable titled “Youth: Today’s Leaders” will give youth the opportunity to share their innovative campaigns on a wide range of issues in which they are uniquely positioned stakeholders; provide examples of how they are bringing vitality to advocacy for the Sustainable Development Goals through youth-led organizations; use of new media tools, and information and communication technologies; and finally, explore ways in which broader civil society can support, connect to, and adopt best practices of youth-led social movements.

 

Youth Film Series

This session will present short films made by youth from across the globe that showcase impactful community based and youth-led projects that support the implementation of 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, including achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Youth Caucus: Day 2 - “Youth on Multilateralism”

On Day 2 of the Youth Caucus, meetings will reflect on the activities and events undertaken on the first day of the conference and continue to highlight the value of intergenerational participation and enhance youth voice.

Youth Hub Session 1: Women and Girls with Alison Smale and Winnie Byanyima

Date: Thursday, 23 August 2018
Time: 11:45 a.m. - 12:45 p.m.

Alison Smale, Under-Secretary-General of Global Communications, Department of Public Information, Ms. Winnie Byanyima, the Conference Chair and Executive Director, Oxfam International and Ms. Jackie Biskupski will dialogue with young girls and women attending the Conference on their respective ideas on how the UN and civil society can best address the gaps and challenges girls and women face today.

Youth Hub Session 2: Bridging the Generation Gap

Date: Thursday, 23 August 2018
Time: 12:45 - 2 p.m.

The purpose of this session is to cultivate a stronger appreciation and understanding of the ways in which intergenerational cooperation can accelerate progress towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The discussion will highlight tools and resources that will help NGOs establish and maintain intergenerational partnerships alliances.

The Youth Jam will continue to offer a space for music, dance and performance arts and youth expression.

The Youth Press Conference will provide a platform for Co-chairs of Conference Youth Sub-committee and other guest speakers to share the milestones and outcomes of youth events at the conference with the press and media.
