The University of Bergen (UiB) has long been a leader in the field of AI education, as the first university in Norway to offer not only bachelor programs in AI and Data Science, but also a master program in machine learning.

“The comprehensiveness of AI research at the University of Bergen is unique in Norway. There are research groups conducting fundamental and applied research in AI across all seven faculties of our university,” said UiB Deputy Rector Pinar Heggernes. “This diversity provides our university with an outstanding ability to conduct interdisciplinary research in AI with perspectives from different disciplines, focusing on a wide variety of possibilities and challenges that AI brings.”

Now with the largest portfolio of artificial intelligence bachelor and master courses in the country, UiB believes that their AI-oriented study programs, DIGI courses (more information below) and research centres will help advance such SDGs as SDG 3 Good Health and Well-being, SDG 4 Quality Education, SDG 10 Reduced Inequalities, SDG 13 Climate action, SDG 14 Life Below Water, and SDG 16 Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions.

The programme and course options available for students interested in AI are many, including but not limited to Digital Culture, Deep Learning, AI Ethics and Image Processing. More information and a full list of available courses are available via the AI Education webpage.

In addition, by offering small and comprehensive digitalization (DIGI) courses packages to students, staff, and the general public, the University of Bergen underscores their commitment  towards preparing all to take the lead in adapting society for the demands of the future. 8 DIGI courses are currently on offer, with an overview available online.

In terms of research, UiB boasts a high number of internationally recognized groups, with applied AI research being carried out across all faculties. Through collaborations between UiB faculties, businesses, international doctoral schools and conference affiliated tutorials, the university ultimately maintains an unparalleled cross-disciplinary competence in AI research.

The following are UiB research centres with a substantial AI focus:

  • Center for Digital Narrative: a Norwegian Centre of Research Excellence which focuses on algorithmic narrativity, new environments and materialities, and shifting cultural contexts.
  • The Center for Data Science: an interdisciplinary centre across several faculties focusing on research and education in central aspects of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence.
  • MediaFutures: a centre that research on new methods and methods for precise audience understanding, for example, AI technology to reveal fake news or filter bubbles.
  • Smart Ocean: a centre for research-based innovation that aims to create a wireless observation system for multi-parameter monitoring of underwater environments and installations.
  • The Centre for Cancer Biomarkers: a centre working on new cancer biomarkers and targeted therapy based on AI.
  • The Centre for the Science of Learning & Technology: a centre contributing to international research and national competence development on the use data and data approaches in understanding education and lifetime learning.

You can learn more about about all facets of AI study at the University of Bergen on the dedicated UiB AI webpage, “established to coordinate, promote and make visible these research, education and innovation initiatives ongoing at UiB, and to facilitate for collaboration both between faculties of UiB and with partners and collaborators outside of the university.”
