Haiti is in dire need of humanitarian assistance. The humanitarian needs are considerable and continue to grow amid devastating flooding and a new earthquake.

Building on the work of the ECOSOC Advisory Group on Haiti, the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) will convene a special meeting on 16 June (10 a.m. in Trusteeship Council Chamber).

It will mobilize action and resources in support of food security in Haiti and call on the international community to show solidarity with the Haitian people and contribute to the funding appeals.

Member States, UN staff, and NGOs, and private sector representatives are invited to attend the event in person or watch live on UN Web TV.

“This is the time to show our solidarity with Haiti and work hand-in-hand with Haitian people towards creating new pathways for sustainable development,” said ECOSOC President Lachezara Stoeva.

Nearly half of the population in Haiti doesn’t have enough to eat. In rural areas, 76 per cent of people are affected by food insecurity.

Restoring livelihoods is fundamental to the humanitarian response. The UN Humanitarian Response Plan for 2023, launched in April, called for an unprecedented $719 million - almost double the amount of 2022.

As of 13 June, the plan is only 22.6 per cent funded.

The United Nations system entities, including OCHA, the World Food Programme, the Food and Agriculture Organization, UNICEF and the International Fund on Agricultural Development, as well as non-governmental organizations, are addressing the immediate emergency food needs while also helping to build resilient and productive food systems.
