Every year on Nelson Mandela International Day, we are invited to devote 67 minutes to helping others (67 = years that Madiba spent as a public servant).

This year, there are two ways for you to get involved alongside other United Nations colleagues:

  1. Group public service project – gardening and trash pick-up on Randall’s Island

The event will feature volunteer activities such as weeding and pruning; planting new trees; picking up plastic trash along the water edge on Randall’s Island.

The activity is organized by the UN Department of Global Communications, the Office of the President of the UN General Assembly, the Permanent Mission of South Africa to the UN, NYC Mayor’s Office for International Affairs and Randall’s Park Alliance.

Date: Friday, 19 July 2024

Time on Randall’s Island: 1:45 – 3:15PM

Transport: In order to reduce our carbon footprint, volunteers are asked to arrive on Randall’s Island via public transport starting at 1:30PM. Directions and meeting location TBC.

What to bring:  closed-toed shoes are required, hats and long pants are suggested. Water will be available. Gloves, tools, RIPA Baseball caps, and light snacks will be provided. Sun Block and Insect Repellent are also available. Please wear your Mandela Day t-shirts from previous years. If you need one this year, some XL shirts are available.

  1. Individual service tracked on the #ActNow app

Join the global movement for change with the UN's #ActNow campaign to take care of our planet and each other. ActNow encourages all of us to change our daily habits in the spirit of Nelson Mandela’s commitment to solving poverty and inequity. By changing our habits and making sustainable choices together we can use our collective voice and our actions for a healthy planeta better economy, a more just society and a world working together.

Visit the ActNow website to learn more or download the mobile app and join the 1 Million Actions for Our Common Future challenge, learn how to make your everyday actions more sustainable, and track your impact!

Once downloaded, it is up to you to log your actions on the app – and encourage others to do the same! The number of actions will be tallied up and will showcase how individual and collective actions can make a difference.
