The United Nations Postal Administration (UNPA) commemorates World Humanitarian Day on 19 August 2022 with the release of three stamps and a souvenir card to raise awareness and funding for humanitarian action.

On 19 August 2003, a bomb attack on the United Nations office in Baghdad, Iraq, killed 22 people, most of whom were humanitarian aid workers. Five years later, the General Assembly adopted a resolution designating 19 August as World Humanitarian Day to express solidarity for people affected by conflicts and natural disasters, and to pay tribute to the humanitarian workers.

Each year, World Humanitarian Day brings together partners from across the humanitarian system to raise public awareness of humanitarian work; to advocate for the survival, well-being and dignity of people affected by crises; and to call for the safety and security of aid workers.

The stamps are in the denominations of $1.40, CHF 2,00 and €1,80 and feature beautiful artwork by the award-winning illustrator Olga Shtonda from Kharkiv, Ukraine. The stamps were designed by Rorie Katz (United Nations).

A surcharge of $0.50, CHF 0,50 or €0,50 is added to the stamps which will go directly to the United Nations Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) to help people in need.

A souvenir card with a statement by Secretary-General António Guterres and Under-Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Martin Griffiths will also be released.

The stamps are available online at the www.unstamps.org and in-person from shops at the UN Headquarters in New York and UN offices in Geneva and Vienna where the stamps can be used for mailing.

The United Nations Postal Administration (UNPA) is in the Facilities & Commercial Activities Service (FCAS) in the Division of Administration (DOA), Department of Operational Support (DOS).
