Responsibilities

Within delegated authority, the Senior Economic Affairs Officer will be responsible for:

Economic or sector analysis

  • Leads or participates in the formulation, organization and management of mandated programmes of economic analysis and the formulation of possible economic strategies, policies and actions, including flagship reports, analytical papers, and policy briefs related to the priorities of Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States for adoption by the international community.
  • Leads or participates in the identification of new or emerging development issues of potential concern to the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States particularly those of a regional or global nature, and designs and develops programmes to address them.
  • Supervises a team of staff economists and statisticians undertaking this work.
  • Commissions economic studies and analyses that cannot be undertaken internally.
  • Conceives, plans and manages expert group meetings, seminars and similar consultations that contribute to the monitoring of the implementation of Programmes of Action for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States.
  • Finalizes reports on development for issuance by the United Nations.
  • Prepares speeches for senior staff and makes presentations on economic issues for specialist or non-specialist audiences.

 

Intergovernmental support

  • Provides substantive support on economic issues to intergovernmental bodies (such as the General Assembly, and the Economic and Social Council).
  • Represents sub-programme 1 at international, regional and national meetings

  • Contributes to the formulation of the medium-term plan, the programme of work and the budget of the unit and participate in the formulation of the organization's overall programme of work and other similar endeavours.
  • Attends to various administrative matters concerning the larger organizational branch.

Education

Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in economics or related field is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. Successful completion of both degree and non-degree programs in data analytics, business analytics or data science programs is an advantage. Phd in economics is desirable.

 

Work experience

  • A minimum of ten years of progressively responsible experience in economic research and analysis, policy formulation, application of economic principles and econometric analysis in development programmes or related area is required.
  • Experience in data analytics, modelling, econometrics, or related area is required.
  • At least five years of experience in quantitative research in economic development is desirable.
  • Experience working with international organizations as well as intergovernmental process is desirable.
  • Experience in analysing sustainable development challenges of Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries, Small Island Developing States and providing related policy advice is desirable.
  • Experience in preparation of speeches for senior staff on economic issues for specialist or non-specialist audiences is desirable.

 

Languages

Responsibilities

Within delegated authority, the Economic Affairs Officer will be responsible for:

Economic or sector analysis

  • Monitors economic and social developments in least developed countries and identifies recurrent and emerging issues related to the effective implementation of the Doha Programme of Action for the Least Developed Countries.
  • Designs and conducts studies of selected issues in economic development and draft resulting reports especially related to enhancing access to education in science, technology, engineering and math in LDCs
  • Interprets and applies results of econometric modelling to analysis of economic prospects and policies.
  • Develops draft policy recommendations pertaining to area of work.
  • Formulates proposals for development strategies, policies and measures for presentation to intergovernmental bodies and others.
  • Attends international, regional, and national meetings to hold discussions with representatives of other institutions.
  • Organizes expert group meetings, seminars, etc. on development issues
  • Prepares speeches and other inputs for presentations by senior staff.

 

Intergovernmental support

  • Provides substantive support on economic issues to intergovernmental bodies (such as the General Assembly, and the Economic and Social Council).

Intern for the OHRLLS

The Office of the High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States (OHRLLS) internship is for two months with an opportunity for extension to a maximum of six months, depending on the needs of the department.

The unpaid internship is designed to be in person and full-time at the New York duty station. Depending on the situation of the successful candidates, the internship may also offer a Flexible Work Arrangement to be conducted hybrid (in-person and remote), and/or temporary FWA for the purpose of G-4 visa processing. Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background, the intern's assigned office as well as the internship period. Duties may include, but are not limited to:

a) Brainstorming new and creative ways to communicate about the work of the office on digital platforms.

b) Scanning latest trends in content and advising colleagues on how to keep the channels fresh and relevant.

c) Supporting the production of new content for office websites.

d) Monitoring other organizational channels and liaising with their social media interns to keep across best practice and production methods.

e) Assisting with the implementation of social media activities to promote priority issues and/or major events.;

f) - Assisting with daily monitoring, community management and maintenance of OHRLLS' global social platforms ;

g) - Assisting with the production of social media assets including the designing of graphics, videos and other assets for social media;

 

Qualifications and special skills

  • Applicants to the programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

(a) Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or.

(b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent);

(c) subject to review on a case-by-case basis, applicants within a few years from graduation who could not apply earlier and who are in an early stage of their careers; as a first time entry into the workforce; are changing careers or due to compelling family circumstances.

  • Educational background in communications, graphic design, journalism, development studies or international relations is desirable.

  • Applicants must be computer literate in standard software applications.

 

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an asset. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
