Technical Abstracts on WOA I  

Three Technical Abstracts of the First Global Integrated Marine Assessment  – World Ocean Assessment I – on “The Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine Biological Diversity of Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction”; on “The Ocean and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals under Agenda 2030”; and on “The Impacts of Climate Change and Related Changes in the Atmosphere on the Oceans” have  been prepared by the Group of Experts for the second cycle of the Regular Process.TheTechnical Abstracts are based upon World Ocean Assessment 1 released in January 2016, and, in particular, upon the Summary of that Assessment, which was approved by the United Nations General Assembly in December 2015.

They are intended to provide support to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, General Assembly resolution 69/292: Development of an international legally-binding instrument under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea on the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity of areas beyond national jurisdiction, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, and the United Nations Open-ended Informal Consultative Process on Oceans and the Law of the Sea.   

The Technical Abstracts represent a key ouput of the Programme of work for the period 2017-2020 for the second cycle of the Regular Process which was adopted by the Ad Hoc Working Group of the Whole on the Regular Process in August 2016 and endorsed by the General Assembly in December 2016.
