Government of Eritrea training programme

Building capacity in the law of the sea and ocean affairs

About

The Division was requested by the Government of Eritrea, through the Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs (DPPA) of the United Nations, to deliver a training course on the law of the sea for Eritrean junior diplomats and relevant government officials.

This initiative was part of a wider DPPA programme of assistance for Eritrea. It was made possible with financial and planning support by UNDP Eritrea.

Activities

The training course was delivered in-person by staff of the Division from 27 to 31 March 2023. It was attended by 27 participants, including 10 women, from five different ministries.

Scope

The five-day training course provided an introduction to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and related Agreements, as well as an overview of the legal and institutional frameworks for the management of oceans at the global, regional and national levels. In addition, it introduced concepts related to the blue economy and ocean finance, and considerations on how these relate to ocean affairs frameworks. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) was introduced in the context of ocean affairs. The training course also addressed cross-cutting issues, such as fisheries, shipping and maritime security.
