On 20 December 2022, the General Assembly declared 12 February as the International Day for the Prevention of Violent Extremism as and when Conducive to Terrorism, in order to raise awareness of the threats linked to violent extremism conducive to terrorism, and to enhance international cooperation in this regard. In the resolution (A/RES/77/243), the General Assembly invites the Office of Counter-Terrorism, in collaboration with relevant Compact entities, to facilitate the observance of the International Day.

The main objectives of this event will be to:

  • raise awareness of the International Day, renew commitment to collaborate on PCVE,
  • highlight the critical role played by intergovernmental organizations, civil society, academia, as well as religious, and young leaders in PCVE.

A number of Member States, civil society organizations and beneficiaries will share their experiences, focusing on how prevention policies and programme support have assisted them in addressing violent extremist threats within their respective communities. The presentations will also seek to explore the future landscape of violent extremism conducive to terrorism and opportunities for prevention.
