High-level Thematic Round Table 2: Leveraging the power of science, technology and innovation for the sustainable development of least developed countries

6 March 2023, Doha time: 9:00 – 12:00
Thematic Roundtables Hall

Science Technology and Innovation (STI) play a critical role in the LDCs’ efforts to expedite poverty eradication, transition to sustainable development and become globally competitive. However, LDCs are often unable to fully benefit economically and socially from technological development due to structural limitations, as there are marked gaps between LDCs and other countries in the area of STI. The DPoA recognizes the central role of science, technology and innovation for least developed countries in fighting multidimensional vulnerability, achieving the SDGs, reaping the benefits of the fourth industrial revolution, recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic and building resilience against emerging challenges, and promoting private sector engagement, digitization and broadband connectivity. Building the STI base requires inter alia; long-term investments in research and development and, developing relationships with research, firms and markets abroad; fostering quality human resources; enabling meaningful and productive use of the Internet in LDCs; and, ensuring a “whole-of-government” approach to digitalisation.

The high-level thematic round tables will focus on consensus-building to renew and reinvigorate partnerships and mobilize additional international support measures and actions in support of least developed countries to enhance their resilience to multiple shocks and accelerate the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.
